"After the Dutch East India Company captured the maritime areas of Ceylon from the Portugese in 1656, it issued Plakkaten on paper as manuscript copies to be posted at various place for administrative purposes. The Dutch clergymen got the religious documents copied on palm leaves following the traditional method. Soon they found this system unsatisfactory and attemps were made since 1720s by the superintendent of the arsenal in the Fort at Colombo to cast Sinhala type in the first instance. By 1736, a press with movable Sinhala type was established in the Fort. It was a join venture by the Dutch Reformed Church and the Duthc East India Company. It printed plakkaten, religious, educational and non-educational books in Sinhala, Tamil and Dutch. The press was active from 1737 to 1796 until it was taken over by the British with the capitulation of Colombo. The introduction of printing to Ceylon had a major impact on learning, writing and communication in the Island. It paved the way for further developments in these fields during the British period. "

"This study examines the productivity of the authors in the field of library and information science in Indonesia during the year of 2001-2010 by using Lotkas law. The population of this study are all kinds of scientific articles contained in the journal library and information science in which the journal is registered in PDII-LIPI databases and published between the years 2001 to 2010. Assessment authors participation was done by using straight count. The sampling technique used is saturated sample. Journals in accordance with the criteria of research as much as 24, 1085 articles written by 1018 authors. Due to this research used straight count only 547 authors counted. Obtained the results of the calculation of the value of n worth 1,92 and C 0,6172. The finding conclude, in the year 2001-2010 the number of certain writers that contribute one article is 61.72% of the total number of authors. Test results showed that the value Dmaks smaller than the critical value, this means that the productivity distribution author library and information science in Indonesia year of 2001-2010 in accordance with the argument of Lotkas law. It is known that the productive author works as a lecturer/librarians derived from the college environment."

With the existence of several regulations regarding the obligation to write articles for students who are about to graduate and the obligation to write journal articles for lecturers, research in certain fields of science will grow, including the field of Library and Information Science. This study uses scientometrics because it relates to exploration and evaluation in a scientific journal. By looking at the publications, it is hoped that this research can reveal the ins and outs of scientific developments in the field of Library and Information (LIS). The purpose of this study is to provide an illustrative discourse for the multidisciplinary development of Library and Information Science and to enrich the repertoire of empirical studies for researchers working in the field of library and information science, especially bibliometric and scientific studies. This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach. The results show that researchers have focused a lot on bibliometrics, Librarians, academic libraries and information literacy in the last five years as seen from the use of keywords. A total of 71 institutions from which the author originates from various fields, not only in the field of libraries. The University of Padjadjaran University's Library Science Study Program ranks as the institution that has contributed the most in producing articles for 5 consecutive years. There are 22 LIS study programs that contribute to the LIS Journal with a rating of SINTA 2 whose study programs are located in 11 parent institutions that oversee them consisting of 7 Faculties, 2 Vocational Schools, 1 Islamic Education Institution and 1 Postgraduate Program. Of the 11 institutions that oversee LIS, it can be seen that the institutions that oversee have an influence on research in the field of LIS."

"In a world awash in data, information systems help provide structure and access to information. Since libraries build, manage, and maintain information systems, librarians and LIS students are often propelled onto the front lines of interactions between library users and technology. But what do librarians need to know to best meet their patron's needs? What exactly are information systems and how do they work?"

It will look at both the last and the next thirty years by charting major technology developments and the ways in which they have not only been adopted and adapted by library services but also how the resulting improvements and enhancements have impacted upon key user communities. But more importantly, the volume projects these developments forward and in addition forecasts and analyses likely future inventions and innovations and how LIS leaders and managers should not only respond but actually help to create and shape our future world."

"In today’s fast growing digital world, the web, mobile, social networks and other digital platforms are producing enormous amounts of data that hold intelligence and valuable information. Correctly used it has the power to create sustainable value in different forms for businesses. The commonly used term for this data is Big Data, which includes structured, unstructured and hybrid structured data. However, Big Data is of limited value unless insightful information can be extracted from the sources of data.
The solution is Big Data analytics, and how managers and executives can capture value from this vast resource of information and insights. This book develops a simple framework and a non-technical approach to help the reader understand, digest and analyze data, and produce meaningful analytics to make informed decisions. It will support value creation within businesses, from customer care to product innovation, from sales and marketing to operational performance.
The authors provide multiple case studies on global industries and business units, chapter summaries and discussion questions for the reader to consider and explore. Big Data for Managers also presents small cases and challenges for the reader to work on – making this a thorough and practical guide for students and managers."
